Racing Update Week Ending 11th May 2012

The flat season is now gathering full momentum and the action so far has been really excellent and I am looking forward to the upcoming Derby Trials. The terrible weather is causing havoc to the racing programme and some of the results have been a little strange to say the least. That said we have had some excellent races so far.The first two classics of the season the Guineas have been fitting to their name as too the French equivalents.

THE CHESTER CUP

Representatives of Highland Racing were not the only celebrities on show at Chester on Cup day,as Mr and Mrs W Rooney were there to see their horse Pippy.

The two-year-old colt, making his debut, was always towards the rear after a slow start and he never got into the race which was run on rain-softened ground.
However, his jockey Richard Kingscote made sure the Tom Dascombe-trained youngster, wearing the colours of the Manchester United and England soccer star and his wife Coleen, got some experience without giving him a hard race in the testing conditions.
"When I went down to the stables I was very impressed and I've got three horses there now," said Rooney.
"The name was just what my wife got called when she was younger."
Meanwhile at the head of affairs, All Fur Coat (9-2) made her racecourse knowledge count as the Jo Hughes-trained filly ran out a convincing winner on her third start. Interestingly the winner was beaten by the George Foster (Ballade de la Mer) trained Lothian Countess who could run run at Chester due to the very soft ground.

THE KENTUCKY DERBY

The horse that won last week's Kentucky Derby is receiving round-the-clock protection amid a backlash against its controversial owner over allegations he made about the racing industry.

Animal Kingdom (seen above winning a great Kentucky Derby) is under tight security at its barn in Maryland after Barry Irwin, a long-standing campaigner for tougher anti-drug rules in the sport, accused rival trainers of being dishonest.
Following his victory in the prestigious annual event last Saturday, Mr Irwin, the chief executive of Team Valor, was asked by a TV reporter why all 30 of his horses were trained by one man, Graham Motion.
"I got tired of other trainers lying to me, and I wanted a guy to tell me the truth," he said. Later he said "the majority" of the 40 trainers he'd worked with had lied to him. "That's what they do," he added.

Camelot swoops to land 2,000 Guineas under cool ride from Joseph O'Brien

The old-fashioned notion of a British Triple Crown winner was revived at Newmarket on Saturday when Camelot, the short-priced winter favourite, won the QIPCO 2,000 Guineas under the coolest of rides from trainer Aidan O’Brien’s increasingly-impressive son, Joseph. With Homecoming Queen winning the 1000 Guineas it looks as if the powerful Coolmore could be heading for their best year yet.

HIGHLAND RACING UPDATE

The eagerly awaited return of Merchant of Dubai at Chester, didn't live up to our hopes,as he trailed in a disappointing 9th/15 having struggled in the very deep ground at Chester.

The weather both at the meeting and beforehand was appalling, more like November than May and the beautifully manicured course, did not look at its best as it was battered by the unseasonable weather. The ground was so soft that the Chester Cup was started with a flag as the authorities were frightened that stalls could not be moved if they were put into place to start the race.

The start was unsatisfactory and we found ourselves 3 from the rear and whilst Graham Lee felt he travelled well for the first 10 furlongs, he was soon struggling going out for the last circuit. He wasn't the only horse in trouble, and there were 6 very good horses left toiling even more than we were. The Chester Cup was meant to be a gruelling race and indeed this is exactly what it turned out to be. The horse was found to have a few problems post race and is currently being treated for such.

I think this was probably the highlight of Merchant of Dubai career in terms of appearances as the Chester Cup is steeped in tradition and it was a real honour to be there on the day. The Hospitality extended to owners was probably the best that I have ever experienced at a racecourse. The food was not only delicious, but it was wonderfully presented and would not disgrace an evening meal at a 5 star hotel. We had our private table in the dining room, but we're asked mid meal if we would allow a single gentleman to join us. As it transpired it was Roger Varian, who incidentally trained the favourite Shubaat for The Chester Cup, but he too ran no sort of race and finished behind us. I think Roger Varien who looks about 12, enjoyed the conversation at the table and he made a point of speaking to me in the weighing room after the race to thank me for making his lunch so enjoyable. He's a nice guy!

It was good seeing so many of our owners there and I'm thankful to Hugh for providing some good pictures for us to remember the day.

It was great to See Sean Kennedy back Racing Hugh in front of the Camera for a change Rick,Drew,Scoop and Guru walk the Chester course

Ballade de la Mer was set to run at Perth, but a knock to her leg has necessitated some antibiotics and steroid creams, and hence was ruled out of entering for Perth as she would have fallen foul of the drug rules.

It was also to be the debut of Lochluichart this Friday, but he too has been using steroid cream to treat an eye infection and will also have to await on the sidelines. The horse has not had his work interrupted and is pleasing Ian Semple with his gallops. He seems also to have settled well into stall work also. We shall now have to look for another debut opportunity for our grey.

Liberty Island seems to have put his niggles behind him. He will be going to Wolverhampton this week for a racecourse gallop and Iain has the next Ayr meeting down as his first target. Ian is excited about horse.

A Warm Welcome

Thank you for visiting this web-site. It has been designed to keep as many of my friends up to date with what is happening with the horses which run either in my name, together with friends or under the banner of Highland Racing

In March 2002 I was invited to join Ally McManus, Iain McCall, Brian Cottam and others at the Cheltenham Festival which was for them a regular engagement. I think Ally was a little worried that I would not enjoy it, not knowing the horses or the form, but he need not have worried. Those 3 days quite literally changed my life, as I fell in love with the racing, the colours, the crowds and excitement of the race.

On my return home and spurred on by a then neighbour Henry Mennie, I visited Lucinda Russell, the Perthshire based trainer and acquired my first horse, a rather splendid cast off called Wainak for the price of a very poor second-hand car. This originally very expensive flat bred horse did me proud over hurdles and rarely ran a bad race, and appropriately gave me my first winner in August 2004, two years and 26 runners on from the start of the adventure.

Over the next few years other horses have followed as did partnerships with friends and then some syndicate/joint ownership horses which run in the name of Highland Racing. Some of my friends and fellow owners live and work literally in every corner of the world, and I know their excitement, anticipation and enjoyment of the joys of ownership are every bit as great as mine. We have been lucky,35 winners from 251 runners at the time of writing and some very nice promising horses in the string. Hopefully that tally will move forward, on a regular basis.

My 6 years in the game have been wonderful, and have been privileged to meet up with some great people and personalities within the sport and have made many new friends, some of whom share in the horses with me. I have been involved in some great adventures and if I ever get around to putting pen to paper, I'm sure I could produce a riveting, hilarious read.

I do hope you find the content of the web-site interesting. It was originally launched in May 2008 and rather like Topsy has grown arms and legs. At the time I am writing this, which is Revamp #1 in April 2009,we have had 30,000 visits and I know form comments received that it seems to be essential reading each Monday after the Weekly Update.

The Open Forum has been, shall we say interesting, with some "pure class" postings as clearly ,very clever people pen a variety of opinions about a cohort of Racing Topics, under a guise of "Nome de Plumes". The standard of some of these has been of the very highest literary order and have not gone un-noticed by some of our Journalistic friends who visit the site, and from time to time the Lawyers of some of the Trainers who are continually besieged. That said it's all in good humour and 2000 postings are testimony to the ambitions of many that can be found on the site daily.

Moving forward we say goodbye to The Scribbler who is off to work for Racing Today and I hope that fans of our topical correspondent can catch up with him there. We say thank you to him for his column over the last year,it has brightened up many dull Monday

I hope to meet as many of you around the Racing circuit in the months ahead, cheering home those Winners

 Cheers

William Powrie

The Open Forum has been great, but there has been a number of if not rude, childish postings of late, and can I ask this stops.  All posters leave a trail back to their computer which our webmaster can block if I ask him to.

The ROA have produced a guide to all UK Racecourses which is very good and have sent me a copy.  Please contact me should you wish one and I will print one off for you.
